World Toilet Day – Toilet Tour Update

Monday, November 19, 2012
Happy world toilet day!

As you're enjoying your daily poo today, spare a thought for the 2.5 billion people around the world who don't have adequate sanitation. And if you're the kind of person who's always online, even while on the loo, that's the perfect opportunity to check out our video of ordinary Australians calling on our government to invest more in life-saving water and sanitation through our aid program, and sign our petition online.

Finally, we wanted to let you know more about the giant toilet's movements...

The giant toilet has now been to 35 locations across 5 states. It's been seen at festivals and fairs, out the front of and inside shopping centres, at trivia nights and cricket matches. It's been the centrepiece of events run by schools, churches, colleges and community groups. It's been seen by more than 20,000 people in the "real world" and by thousands more online.

And it's still going strong. We'd like to get as many Australians involved, and as many signatures as possible on the petition between now and World Water Day – March 22, 2013 – to let the government know that Australians want their aid doing real good in the lives of the poorest communities in the world. Please join with us to make it happen.

Poo powers a motorbike for 300kms!

Ever thought about an alternative fuel to petrol for your vehicle? With rising petrol prices we are all hoping something cheaper comes along soon aren't we?! Something cheaper and environmentally sustainable would be a double win. So has it ever crossed your mind that poo might be a good source of fuel? Probably not, it isn't really something one ponders over is it? But, for Japanese Toilet company, TOTO, biofuel is something that has been in the mix for a while. Last week they displayed a 3-wheeled motorcycle in their Tokyo showroom, that operates on livestock poo and can travel as far as 300 kms on a tank of biofuel.

Following on from our last post it is clear that biofuels is a topic of the future (and who wouldn't boast that their vehicle is getting them from home to work on poo?

It's not often that you get a good toilet story in the mainstream media, but this one's got everything.

Solar-powered, hydrogen producing toilets, cash prizes from Bill Gates, the low-down on why toilets are a great investment for ending poverty, as well as a nifty little animation about reinventing the toilet (comes with mild language warning)...
